The owners of Morgan’s Rock Hacienda and Ecolodge on 4,500 acres in Playa Ocotal State, Nicaragua, announce plans over the next two years to create a second boutique lodge destination on a 5,000-acre coffee plantation surrounded by primary growth rainforest in the north of the country.

Eric and Carolina Poncon envision their second upscale eco-lodge as yet another step in fulfilling their vision of putting their family lands to productive agriculture, forestry and tourism use – but only if it’s done sustainably. Sigue leyendo

Sustainable tourism here to stay

Ms Nicholson-Doty

Port of Spain, Trinidad – Responsible travel is no longer a cliché.

That’s the view of Trinidad and Tobago’s Minister for Tourism, Stephen Cadiz.

Speaking to the 14th Sustainable Tourism Conference, Mr. Cadiz said that it was in everyone’s interest to take care of the Caribbean, which represented one of the world’s oldest tourism industries.

Profitability was the keyword of the industry, he noted, while warning that it was a fragile one and had ripple effects on other industries. As well as that, there was intense competition and service challenges.

However, there were also great opportunities and the conference was about trying to identify joint solutions. The Caribbean’s first priority must be to secure its status as the premier worldwide warm-weather destination, but internal competition was secondary to getting people to the region in the first place.  Sigue leyendo

Ziyarates Fez: a Step towards Sustainable Tourism

Riad Ghita, Fez

In the heart of the medina of Fez—a UNESCO World Heritage Site—a new project to attract tourists began in 2008. The project involved 26 families in the tourism sector. The families involved are owners of houses with traditional architecture and decorations. Many of these people have little to no income.

The tourism project is part of the National Initiative of Human Development, a committee which specializes in tourism. The group visited the traditional houses and decided which ones should be chosen to be part of the project and which homes would be excluded. Their selections were based on the extent to which the houses are traditional, on the geographical situation and also on the reputation of families themselves–as they are meant to represent the Moroccan culture and the customs of the millenary city of Fez. Domestic and eco-tourism: A win-win formula for sustainable tourism industry

photoTHE FIVE East Africa Community partner states of Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda and Burundi have so much in common that unification of the region makes a lot of sense.  With the prospects of continued tourism growth in East Africa, the region is now marketed as a single tourist target. Hospitality and tourism industry is a leading employer and   fastest developing segment worldwide.
This is perfect timing for tourism stakeholders to take a microscopic examination of how best the community can benefit from this major sector profitably and sustainably. In the past, tourism often did more damage to the ecosystem than good.  As the industry diversifies, the region must promote domestic tourism and adopt practical approaches of ecotourism.  Fortunately, without exception, all member states are demonstrably committed to making both domestic and ecotourism the nucleus of future initiatives.  Leaders and legislators in the industry are poised to protect Africa’s threatened ecosystems, endangered species and the precious diversity of its wilderness and culture. Sustainable Tourism: How to Mitigate the Effects of Tourist Populations in Resort Communities

Mammoth MountainSustainable tourism may seem like an oxymoron. Historically, tourism has resulted in environmental and cultural degradation across the globe. While a diversified economy remains optimal, many places depend heavily on tourism. Locations with delicate natural environments such as the rain forests of Brazil, the coral reefs of Australia, and the plains of Africa often suffer great environmental degradation at the cost of tourist dollars. The same is also true for small resort villages in the United States.
