Environmentally-aware travel company, Gap Adventures, will be hosting an evening of discussion at the Future of Tourism event, to be held on Tuesday, September 27, 2011 in Toronto as part of the United Nations World Tourism Day. Gap Adventures will use the Future of Tourism event, which will be webcast live in Australia at 9:30am on Wednesday 28 September (on http://uri.mediaco.ca/gap_adventures_092711_T39308), to stimulate debate and raise awareness of the importance of sustainable tourism and the importance it is expected to hold for the travel industry in coming years.

The event will feature a creative exchange between visionaries from a celebrated panel of industry experts including founder of Gap Adventures, Bruce Poon Tip; Executive Director of the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC), Erika Harms; Executive director of Planeterra and founder of the International Ecotourism Society (TIES), Megan Epler-Wood; and travel blogger for everything-everywhere.com, Gary Arndt.

“Tourism is one of the largest industries on earth. It is worth $6 trillion, generates 9.1% of the world GDP, and supports more than 258 million jobs worldwide. Furthermore, tourism is the fundamental lifeline and vital to the livelihood of countless countries globally,” says Bruce Poon Tip, Gap Adventures’ founder.  “It possesses the power to stimulate and strengthen economies, create employment opportunities and foster financial security, in addition to battling poverty and building a stable future.”

“With hundreds of millions of international tourists travelling every year, sustainable tourism is vital to minimize the negative implications of travel, while maximizing its power to help make positive change in the world,” adds Poon Tip.

“We’re excited to have our friends from the United Nations Foundation (UNF) and the Global Sustainable Tourism Council on hand to launch their global campaign to help raise awareness for sustainable tourism. Plus, there’ll be a special pre-recorded message from scientist and climate-change activist David Suzuki,” shares Poon Tip.
