
Kolkata, Sept 23 (Calcutta Tube / IBNS) Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) is preparing an addendum to code named “Approach to Sustainability” which will be implemented and certified to ensure the greenness of abuilding, said a top official here on Friday.
The official also cited example of the Taj Mahal as a true stance of energy efficient architecture.
The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and CII- Sohrabji Godrej Green Business Centre organized a one day Seminar on Green Building-A Step Towards Sustainability on Friday in Kolkata.
This one day seminar provided insight on the various aspects of green building as well as current and future trends.
The seminar was divided into three consecutive sessions focusing on renewable energy and energyefficiency; water and waste management and policies related to green building and green building ratings in India.Prem C Jain, Chairman, Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) graced the occasion as the key speaker.
Addressing the seminar, Jain elaborated on the various aspects of green buildings and its relevance to India.
He started off by defining green building, which is an environment friendly building with minimum energyconsumption and waste elimination.
Once he shed light on nature of Green Building, he insisted that the concept of green building is no new concept but dates back in centuries citing the example of Taj Mahal, a true stance of energy efficient architecture.
While citing the problems of the investors in terms of initial hike in investments, Jain stressed on the benefits of the green building business.
Firstly, it assures a reduction in energy consumption by 2/3 from about 100kw to 30 kw, ensures 0% waste of water since every drop of water gets recycled and leading to 30% more fresh air, he said.
The builders are plunging into green buildings since the user awareness is leading to user demand, said Jain.
“IGBC is preparing an addendum to code named ‘Approach to Sustainability’ which will be implemented and certified to ensure the greenness of a building. It is such a structure which sits on the planet but requires noenergy from the world,” he said.Sanjay Wadvani, Deputy High Commissioner, British Deputy High Commission, said that with the evolvement of green building it is essential to maintain sustainability.
According to a report by IFC, 29% of large investors are eager to invest in green building investments.
Explaining about the different green initiatives by UK, he spoke of the cutting edge technology UK is providing for construction of green buildings.
He also announced that the coming Olympics is going to be held on green building principle.
India has an immense scope for promotion and development of green buildings with the existence of a large number of platinum and gold rated buildings, he said, adding UK is eager to work closely with India towardsbuilding a greener and sustainable future.
Anil Baijal, Chairman, CII West Bengal State Council and Pradeep Dhobale, Chairman, Environment Task Force, CII Eastern Region also addressed the gathering at the inaugural session.
