Chile and Peru pilot new global sustainable tourism criteria for destinations

Overseen by GSTC’s Destination Working Group and managed by NGO partner Sustainable Travel International, the Global Sustainable Tourism Council’s Criteria for Destinations are designed to orient destination managers, communities, and businesses toward the steps that are needed to sustain their natural and cultural assets, while benefiting local communities.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) has selected the Cusco-Sacred Valley-Machu Picchu corridor in Peru, and the shores of Lake Llanquihue, Puerto Varas, and Frutillar in the Lakes Region of Chile for the second round of its pilot program to test its new Criteria and Indicators for Destinations.  These new Early Adopters are the first South American destinations to participate.  Sigue leyendo

Crean en Grecia el primer observatorio europeo de turismo sostenible

Las islas griegas del mar Egeo contarán con el apoyo del primer observatorio orientado al turismo sostenible en Europa para encauzar así su crecimiento en la industria y estudiar el impacto ambiental y socioeconómico de las políticas aplicadas. Se trata del «Centro de Monitoreo de Observatorios de Turismo Sostenible», el primero en su tipo en el continente con el auspicio de laOMT.
Según una nota de prensa de la Organización Mundial del Turismo (OMT) y artículos publicados en los medios especializadosgreekreporter.com y portaldeamerica.com, el turismo sostenible en Grecia podrá cobrar un renovado impulso a partir de los estudios, análisis y conclusiones que elabore el flamante observatorio.  Sigue leyendo

Haiti makes a tourism pitch: We’ve got pristine beaches and the Caribbean, too

Haiti has clear markers to prove its potential — island neighbor Dominican Republic and its private beaches run by cruise lines — but it needs to make a clear pitch to potential travelers that promises them the Caribbean vacation they dream about.
