Himachal Pradesh is reviewing the State Tourism Policy of 2005 with technical guidance from the World Bank to give more emphasis to Sustainable Tourism development. Given the prospective growth of tourism in Lahaul-Spiti and Kinnaur, a perspective tourism development plan is being prepared for the districts, informed Virbhadra Singh, Chief Minister, Government of Himachal Pradesh, while presiding over the review meeting of the board of directors of Himachal Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation (HPTDC) and tourism and civil aviation departments in Shimla this week.
Singh said that Wi-Fi would be provided in the Keylong region so that the tribal region of the state could be provided communication connectivity throughout the year, The Times of India reported. The Spiti region would also be provided with Wi-Fi connectivity, he said.
On the occassion, the Chief Minister also launched the Himachal Tourism online information system for collection of tourist statistics, and an SMS-based software to address tourists’ queries, suggestions and complaints.
Further, the state tourism department has started a study of Dharamshala-McLeodganj area so that tourism activities can be developed there on a sustainable basis, Singh said. A master plan and a mobility plan for Chintpurni, Naina Devi and Kangra town would also be prepared soon, he added.
The Minister said that the state had great potential for water sports and efforts were on to set up house boats and cruises in the Maharana Pratap Sagar and Gobind Sagar reservoir. A mini water amusement park would be set up at Sadhupul in district Solan. The state government would encourage opening hotels and tourist facilities in those backward panchayats of the state which had vast tourism potential, he said.
Virbhadra Singh also directed HPTDC to explore the possibility of opening more camping facilities in its properties given their eco-friendly operations and popularity among tourists. All modern facilities, including toilets, should be provided in these tents, he said.
