MGM Casino Bets Big On Solar

In rooftop solar terms, MGM Resorts International is one high roller.

The NYSE-listed gaming and hospitality chain is about to install one of the largest rooftop solar arrays in the world in Las Vegas at its Mandalay Bay Resort Convention Center.

At 6.2 megawatts (MW), 20,000 panels will cover 20 acres of roof, but that will still provide only 20% of the building’s power demand.

NRG Solar, a subsidiary of the utility NRG, is designing and building the system, and MGM will buy the electricity through a long term power purchase agreement, locking in low rates.

The casino company leads the industry in sustainability initiatives, cutting energy intensity by more than 12% over the past five years, and saving about 2.5 billion gallons of water.

It is one of 23 major hotels that participates in the Hotel Carbon Measurement Initiative, an effort to standardize how they measure carbon emissions.

NRG has become one of the largest solar developers in the US, and is spinning off that unit in anupcoming IPO on the NY Stock Exchange.
