In a zoomable series of nationwide maps created by the the Cool Climate Network, an academic-government-NGO collaboration at UC Berkeley, some nifty data visualization lays bare what we already know: the urban centers emit less, carbon footprint-wise, than the suburbs. Above, a screenshot of the city and its surroundings. You can also zoom in on individual zip codes to see just how many metric tons of stuff that small area is billowing into the air, broken down according to source: transportation, housing, food, goods, and services. There are also specific, separate maps for household energy use and transportation use. Enjoy digging.
