ICT: Rising Carbon Footprint Can Be Reduced

BANGKOK – Information Communication Technology (ICT) is generally supposed to promote good environmental protection through use of e-services such as paperless communications and teleconferencing that reduces travel, especially air travel. But, increasingly questions are being asked whether adopting ICTs is really contributing to reducing the carbon footprint.

“ICT sector has a carbon footprint very similar to aviation industry,” argues Laina Raveendran Greene who is the Executive Director and Chief Strategy and Investment Officer of IBST, one of the four publicly-listed independent telecom tower companies in Indonesia.

INAUGURATION: Shanghai launches its carbon emissions trading market on November 26, 2013 (PEI XIN)

Tianjin, a port city in north China, launched the country’s fifth regional carbon emissions trading (CET) market on December 26, 2013. According to the Tianjin Climate Exchange which hosts the market, a total of 4,040 permits were traded on the first day at an average price of 29.78 yuan ($4.86), with PetroChina Co., the country’s largest oil and gas producer, included among the buyers. Each permit gives the owner the right to discharge 1 ton of carbon dioxide. An initial 114 companies from power, iron and steel, chemical, petrochemical and gas extraction industries were included under the quota allocation. The companies included have collectively emitted more than 20,000 tons of carbon dioxide since 2009. Emissions trading is a widely adopted method of putting a price on carbon dioxide produced by burning fossil fuels such as coal and gas.

Para ello, se ha realizado un estudio en el que se ha cuantificado las emisiones de dióxido de carbono en este tipo de alojamientos como indicador de sostenibilidad de ellos, en el que se han tenido en cuenta hospedajes de Extremadura y Castilla-León, por ser las comunidades con mayor índice de ocupación del país y por la proximidad entre ellas.

El Cluster de Turismo de Extremadura ha reconocido la sostenibilidad de diez alojamientos rurales, nueve de ellos de la región extremeña y uno ubicado en Castilla y León, a través de un proyecto titulado  ‘Huella Rural CO2’ que ha investigado la cuantificación sistemática de carbono que desprenden este tipo de hospedajes.

Caribbean Sustainable Tourism Awards – no Greenwashers thanks!

The awards, organised by the Caribbean Tourism Organisation (CTO) and TravelMole, recognise sustainable tourism products and services in the region.

Individuals, groups, organisations and companies in any of the CTO’s member countries are invited to submit entries for a number of award categories including the Caribbean Excellence in Sustainable Tourism Award; Destination Stewardship Award; Sustainable Accommodation Award; Community Benefit Award; Heritage Protection Award; and the Biodiversity Conservation Award.

«Winners will demonstrate comprehensive strategic efforts to reduce their carbon footprint, increase use of renewable energy, preserve the natural environment and create exciting, value-added experiences that are also sustainable,» said Gail Henry, CTO’s sustainable tourism product specialist.

«It is unfortunate that some entities are guilty of green washing where they change a few bulbs or start a compost heap and immediately begin promoting themselves as sustainable or green.»

«We want our awards to be recognised as a standard bearer that will signal to visitors that the winning entity has reached a level of excellence in its sustainable tourism practices.»

Nominees will be judged on sustainable tourism best practices which improve long-term competitiveness and preserve the authenticity of tourism products or services.
