Meeting in Winchester to hear how city can cut carbon footprint

Hampshire Chronicle: Cutting carbon footprint: Winchester's St George's Street

CLIMATE change charity Winchester Action on Climate Change is inviting people to a talk by Alice Hooker-Stroud of the renowned Centre for Alternative Technology on how the UK can cut its carbon footprint to zero by 2030.

The meeting is on Tuesday March 11 at 7.3pm at the United Church in Jewry Street.

CAT will show how we can maintain a modern standard of living at the same time as reducing our carbon footprint to zero, using only existing technology.

The meeting will be chaired by city councillor Jan Warwick, portfolio holder for Neighbourhoods and Environment Portfolio.

Winchester district aims to cut its yearly carbon footprint by 30 per cent between 2004 and the end of 2015.

WinACC is now starting to look at what the target needs to be for the five years after that, to 2020 – and even more important, how we could meet the target.

Chris Holloway, WinACC director, said: “We need to know if it’s best to focus on private households, business or the public sector? Does transport or heating release the most greenhouse gas into our atmosphere? Does recycling matter? What would really make the most difference? This meeting will help us decide on the route to follow.”
